Excitement Mounts as Formula E Confirms Teams and More
With less than five months to go until the inaugural Formula E Championship season revs its electric engines on September 13, the world’s newest motorsport is shifting into high gear. The teams have been approved, the point system confirmed and test dates set, to name but a few of the latest exciting updates.
The past month has seen some acceleration on the road to the first-ever fully electric race series. FIA has announced a number of updates following the World Motor Sport Council in Marrakesh, Morocco on April 11 that have fans fevering for this unique, innovative and certain-to-be-thrilling motorsports first.
10 teams approved
The FIA confirmed that 10 Formula E teams had been fully approved by the Council: Drayson Racing, China Racing, Andretti Autosport, Dragon Racing, e.dams, Super Aguri, Audi Sport Abt, Mahindra Racing, Virgin Racing and Venturi Grand Prix will all be battling head-to-head come September 13 in Beijing.
The Council also confirmed that the points for the series will use the regular FIA system with the addition of three points for pole position and two points for fastest lap. FIA awards as follows: 1st = 25pts, 2nd = 18pts, 3 = 15pts, 4th = 12pts, 5th = 10pts, 6th = 8pts, 7th = 6pts, 8th = 4pts, 9th = 2pts and 10th = 1pt.

Donington Park here we come – it’s free!
All official pre-season tests will be held at Donington Park circuit in the UK – and the best part is free admission for fans! That’s right, if you’re in the area don’t miss this unique moment in the Formula E story. The circuit will be available to all 10 teams for five days of testing beginning on July 3 (subsequent dates: July 4, 9, 10 and August 19). Don’t miss this chance for unprecedented access to see and hear the 200kw (270bhp) Spark-Renault SRT_01E single-seaters in action.
Further details on how the public can attend Formula E test days will be available on the Formula E (www.fiaformulae.com) and Donington Park (www.donington-park.co.uk) websites soon.
The teams will take delivery of their first Spark-Renault SRT_01E cars on May 15. Stay tuned to be one of the first to get a glimpse of the actual cars the teams will be testing this summer.
Update your calendars!
The FIA also announced some changes to the Formula E calendar. The Rio de Janeiro “ePrix”, previously scheduled on November 15 as Round 3 of the championship, has been postponed to another season. A brand-new host city will be announced shortly for the race now scheduled on February 14. Furthermore, the date of the Los Angeles race was moved to April 4. Full details of the new host city and the final calendar will be revealed on the Formula E website soon.
Round 2 unwrapped
The layout of the Formula E Putrajaya ePrix, which is Round 2 of the championship on October 18, was revealed recently as well. The Beijing circuit was unwrapped in March.
