Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour Goes to Sydney

The Webb Ellis Cup is coming to Sydney, Australia, on June 19, delivered by DHL for the second leg of the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour. In the land down under the sport of Rugby will take on the tradition of Boomerang in DHL’s Rugby vs. The World Challenge.

The Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour is set to arrive at its second stop: Sydney, Australia. There for two days, the Webb Ellis Cup will visit locations in and around the city, including a drive out to the Blue Mountains with former Australian Rugby Union International George Gregan as part of Land Rover’s Least Driven Path. The Trophy will also visit a local school and rugby club, giving rugby fans access to rugby’s greatest prize.

Sydney’s Darling Harbor will provide a beautiful backdrop for DHL’s second Rugby vs. The World Challenge: Rugby vs. Boomerang.

Over the next 12 months, Rugby’s most coveted prize is visiting 15 countries as part of a celebration of Rugby in the lead up to Rugby World Cup 2015, hosted in England and in Cardiff. DHL is delivering the Tour in partnership with England 2015 and Land Rover.

Last month the Webb Ellis Cup was in Tokyo where it visited iconic locations like Mount Fuji before being the star attraction for the last event at the National Stadium, which saw Japan qualify for Rugby World Cup 2015. Click here to view the Tokyo Tour video.

Rugby vs. The World
Beautiful Darling Harbor in downtown Sydney will be the site of DHL’s next Rugby vs. The World challenge that pits the sport of Rugby against the longstanding Australian tradition of Boomerang. Rugby legend Nathan Sharpe will represent Rugby while aboriginal Boomerang veteran Laddie Timbery will represent Boomerang.

Stay tuned right here to DHL InMotion for all the highlights of the Rugby vs. The World Challenge in Sydney – shining a spotlight on the sport of Rugby and an Australian tradition.

The three-part, lighthearted competition will feature a rugby ball kicking challenge, boomerang throwing challenge and finally a "Giant Jenga" challenge. What's that, you ask? You'll just have to wait and see!

The first Rugby vs The World Challenge in Tokyo say Rugby line up against Sumo wrestling. Watch two sporting legends go head to head and have a lot of fun on the pitch where Rugby was born in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Laddie Timbery is a respected Koori elder from the Eora Nation whose family has been making the traditional original returning boomerang for years. Made from mangrove knee, their boomerangs have natural bend. Laddie’s family is highly regarded for their unique craftsmanship of "burning in" – a technique they have been using for 193 years.

Nathan Sharpe is one of Australia’s most decorated rugby players, who has left an indelible impression on the game. Retiring as Captain of his country, he is Australia’s most capped forward with 116 tests and the second most capped player ever. “Sharpie” played in three Rugby World Cup campaigns and in his final year of international rugby in 2012 he was awarded, for the second time, the prestigious John Eales Medal, for Wallaby Player of the Year.
