Rugby World Cup Leaves for the Land of the Rising Sun
The Webb Ellis Cup is going on tour! First stop: Japan, host of the Rugby World Cup 2019 and also the site of the first Rugby vs. the World challenge: Rugby vs. Sumo.
“So there it goes,” said Will Greenwood, England Rugby 2015 Ambassador, as the DHL plane lifted off from the company’s hub at East Midlands Airport in the UK on May 20. “The Webb Ellis Cup off to the Land of the Rising Sun. Well, Rugby is all about going on tour, isn’t it?”

A celebration of Rugby kicked off yesterday. The Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour is underway with the first stop being none other than Japan, who will host Rugby World Cup in 2019 and where a key Rugby World Cup 2015 qualifier is taking place between Japan and Hong Kong.
DHL and Land Rover are cosponsoring the tour. We’ll get the trophy safely to each country and Land Rover will take it to places it has never been before.
In Japan, the most coveted silverware in Rugby and will travel the East Asian island nation to get up close and personal with as many fans as possible. From local schools to iconic landmarks the cup and its entourage have a busy schedule indeed.
Rugby vs. Sumo
The first stop will also be the first site of DHL’s Rugby Vs. the World Challenge – a light-hearted competition to showcase the sport of Rugby by setting it up against a sport unique to the country that the Cup is visiting.
For Japan, that sport is Sumo. A well-known Sumo wrestler will go up against a Rugby player in a three-part challenge that showcases the skills involved in each sport. It’s sure to be loads of fun so stay tuned to the DHL InMotion Stream for all the highlights.
A century of Rugby in Japan
Rugby union is a popular sport in Japan, which has the fourth largest population of rugby union players in the world. Considering that the sport has been played there for over a century, it should come as no surprise that there are 125,000 Japanese of rugby players and 3631 official rugby clubs – or that the Japan national team is ranked 13th in the world.
