Record-breaking US crowd sees Manchester United advance to ICC Final
It was the biggest crowd ever to watch a soccer match in the United States – and Manchester United delivered a solid win against Real Madrid to move undefeated into the International Champions Cup final.
Sports fans in Ann Arbor, Michigan are normally used to packing into Michigan Stadium to watch a different kind of football – the kind played by the University of Michigan Wolverines, a top college team playing American football.

But over the weekend, it was the global variety of football – soccer – that was the hottest ticket in town. Manchester United have been drawing huge crowds during their entire tour of the United States, but no crowd was bigger than the 109,318 fans at ‘The Big House’ that watched the Reds’ 3-1 win over Real Madrid. In fact, the match set an American attendance record for a soccer match. A brace from Ashley Young and a goal off the bench in the second half from Chicharito was more than enough to handle Real Madrid.
"Three hundred thousand fans have watched us already and, now we're in the Miami final, [the total] will be even more than that," (coach Louis van Gaal on ManU’s success in the US)
Manchester United remain undefeated on their tour through the US, and the win against Real Madrid booked the Reds a ticket to the ICC final against fellow Premier League side Liverpool. The match starts at 8 p.m. local time in Miami on August 4.
The match will be the last of Manchester United’s Tour 2014 through the United States before the team heads home to prepare for the start of the Premier League season, which gets under way on August 16 against Swansea.
