World Cup Reds - United Sends Most Players to Brazil
14 Manchester United players are competing in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off today in Brazil – tying German powerhouse Bayern Munich for the most of any club.
Millions of fans around the world are ratcheting up for the highly anticipated 2014 FIFA World Cup, which gets underway today with host Brazil kicking off against Croatia at 5:00 p.m. local time. Football comes home to the sport’s world leader – who will take the pitch tonight at the Arena de Sao Paulo with five stars on their jerseys.
Though we won’t see any on opening night, there will be plenty of opportunities to watch our favorite Reds stars on the World Cup stage – more, in fact, than all other clubs save one. 14 United players have been called up for this year’s tournament – tying Germany’s Bayern Munich.
World Cup Reds
Belgium: Fellaini, Januzaj
Ecuador: Valencia
England: Jones, Smalling, Welbeck, Rooney
France: Evra
Japan: Kagawa
Mexico: Hernandez
Netherlands: Van Persie
Portugal: Nani
Spain: De Gea, Mata
Keep a keen eye on nineteen-year-old sensation Adnan Januzaj and Marouane Fellaini, who have been selected by Belgium, a team widely seen as the tournament's dark horse. Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney have all made the trip to the Southern Hemisphere as part of England’s 23-man squad, a side that faces always-dangerous Italy in their opening match.
Antonio Valencia will sport the yellow jersey of Ecuador, while Patrice Evra and Shinji Kagawa will suit up in blue for France and Japan respectively.
“I want to play with joy and I believe I can do this with my teammates.” (Shinji Kagawa)
And don’t miss United strikers Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez (Mexico) and Robin van Persie (Netherlands). Though not considered favorites this go around, don't go betting against the Dutch. With new Reds boss Louis van Gaal at the helm and van Persie as team captain, the orange squad is certainly one to keep an eye on.
“I will be as sharp as a knife in Brazil.” (Robin van Persie)
Luis Nani is the only player in Portugal’s squad representing the Premier League, while neighboring Spain – the reigning world champions – have called up David De Gea and Juan Mata.
We wish all the Boys from Old Trafford all the best for a fantastic tournament! Good luck!
