Gewandhausorchester in Vienna
In what has become something of an annual tradition, the Gewandhausorchester players recently took to the stage of the Wiener Musikverein in Vienna, Austria.
The three concert series from October 19 - 21 brought the sounds of Bach (and others) to the city of Mozart. With a program that included Bach's 4th Orchestra Suite alongside works from Beethoven, Schostakowitsch as well as Bartholdy and Bruckner, the orchestra played to a full house each night.
With violinist Nikolaj Znaider in Vienna to join the Gewandhausorchester, led by conductor Riccardo Chailly, the performances were wildly anticipated, not least because of the orchestra's storied history with the Musikverein. Though each night brought something new, each ended with a standing ovation.
Always friendly and excited to be out on the road, the touring orchestra undertook a bit of sightseeing in the city on the Danube. Over on their blog, you can follow the percussionist along on a visit to a local gong maker as well as catch glimpses of the touring company enjoying local cuisine. As well, there are links to podcasts of their Austrian program and a preview of what to expect when the Gewandhausorchester embarks on their North American tour next month.
