Gewandhausorchester
Gewandhausorchester at Lucerne Music Festival
The Gewandhausorchester once again sets out on tour, this time for a week of performances to wrap up the summer season.
With performances in Switzerland, Germany and England, the acclaimed orchestra will be leaving their home in Leipzig to attend showcases from September 7-12. The tour begins with two special dates at the world-famous Lucerne Festival. Both concerts feature the Gewandhausorchester and choirs, including the children’s and women’s choirs.
The theme this year at Lucerne is “Psyche” and the tremendous power of music on the soul. Providing both timeless and contemporary perspectives on that motif, the orchestra’s hand-selected works are guaranteed to stir spirits deeply. On the bill for Sunday, September 7, is Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony, as well as a modern-day rendition of its opening, Paraphrase, composed by Friedrich Cerha in 2010. Mahler’s epic Third Symphony is on the marquee the following evening. The two shows offer a sensational glimpse into the great composers’ sonic depictions of human nature and into their own ingenious musical-philosophical psyches – flavored of course with the Gewandhausorchester’s eminent and inimitable sound, known in German as the Gewandhausklang.
The orchestra’s debut performance at the annual Lucerne Festival was in 1998, but its ties to the city date back even further. In 1916, Lucerne and Geneva were the first foreign tour destinations that showered the Leipzig musicians with fame and acclaim abroad.
In the decades since, extensive touring has become a major stronghold of the ensemble’s activities. As Official Logistics Partner to the team, DHL ensures that they have what they need when and where they need it, whisking their precious instruments and equipment from one stately stage to the next.
