Gewandhausorchester sells out in London
London is last on Gewandhausorchester’s European tour 2014 travel agenda, wrapping up a dazzling three-cities-in-a-week festival tour. On the heels of performances in Lucerne and Berlin, the orchestra is set for sterling, sold-out performances at the BBC Proms.
The Proms, as the eight-week summer music festival is more casually known, is one of the world’s biggest and most famous classical concert series. This year the Gewandhausorchester from Leipzig present two nights of performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
On September 11, the esteemed German players take music enthusiasts on an acoustic journey through Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 in D minor, followed the next evening by a high-honor performance that was unsurprisingly sold out well in advance. A highpoint of every season in recent Proms history, Beethoven's iconic Choral Symphony returns this year to its once-traditional slot on the penultimate night for a climactic finale before the season’s world-famous closing celebration – the Last Night of the Proms.
The two Proms appearances are a crowning conclusion to the ensemble’s breathtaking tour through major European cities for music festivals in Lucerne ((link)) and Berlin ((link)). Keeping a tight schedule requires detailed planning combined with professional flexibility in synch with trusted partners such as Official Logistics Partner DHL.
Though achieving musical mystique on stage is the orchestra’s specialty, even seasoned travellers among them admit to a sense of awe by DHL’s logistics superpowers that make the transport and delivery of their invaluable instruments happen without a hitch. “Especially when we’re on tour that’s extremely important,” says cellist Hendrik Zwiener.
“I think it’s incredible that we can pack up our instruments after a concert in Vienna, go to the hotel for a cozy night’s sleep and fly the next day to London - and all the instruments are there! Nothing’s damaged and they’re all in the right place, somehow having arrived after crossing the Channel overnight. It’s fascinating, and our tightly scheduled tours wouldn’t be possible without it.”
DHL is proud to make it possible for Gewandhausorchester’s prestigious summer festival sets in September, caring for their precious cargo with a full palette of dedicated equipment and expertise. To catch a glimpse behind the scenes of the 2014 European tour, check out the Gewandhaus Tour Blog.
