898 days of waiting and finally the moment was here: Andris Nelsons became the new chief conductor of the Gewandhausorchester on February 22. “I’m so excited to finally start the wonderful journey with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig as its 21st Gewandhauskapellmeister,” said Andris Nelsons who was appointed to his new role already in 2015.
In order to celebrate the new era, Nelsons leads the Gewandhausorchester on his inauguration tour through Europe. The tour was kicked off with Nelson’s first concert in Vienna’s Musikverein on April 22. Until May 6, the orchestra will perform in renowned concerts halls such as the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden and the Philharmonie de Paris. The Gewandhausorchester, which is one of the world’s largest and most revered travelling orchestras, will perform pieces by Mozart, Tschaikowski, Beethoven and Brahms.

Since his first performance in Leipzig in 2011, Nelsons has felt an exceptional bond with the musicians and audience in the Eastern German city. "There's a special musical and human connection with the orchestra", said Nelsons in an interview with InMotion. "It's a family-like feeling with the audience and the whole institution."
The new Gewandhauskapellmeister is considered to be one of the most innovative conductors in the world. He is also Chief Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and will move back and forth between Boston and Leipzig. Nelsons’ next tours with the Gewandhausorchester will lead through Europe in October and January, and to Asia in May 2019. DHL is excited to accompany Nelsons and the Leipzig-based orchestra on their new joint journey.
