As he crossed the finish line, Nico Rosberg’s jabbed his fist into the air: “Yeah, guys. Awesome!” A second consecutive victory had secured him the runner-up spot in the drivers’ world championship. But his team-mate Lewis Hamilton also had reason to celebrate: after posting a seventh fastest lap of the year, he can now no longer be caught in his defense of the DHL Fastest Lap Award.

Achieving it was far from an easy task. The three-time world champion had to contend with three pit stops in his dogged pursuit of team-mate Nico Rosberg over 71 laps. It was on Lap 49, two after his third and final pit stop, that Hamilton finally clocked the fastest time of the race – 1:14.832 minutes.

“I was pushing like crazy and genuinely had nothing left,” said Lewis Hamilton. “I was all over Nico but couldn’t get past as the DRS zone sadly just wasn’t long enough. It’s a shame because it’s such a great track, but you just can’t get close enough to race.”

As soon as Hamilton got close to his race-leading team-mate, the dirty air from the other Silver Arrow robbed him of downforce. “Motorsport is about fine lines, you know, about tenths of a second, but you can’t get close enough within a tenth of a second to be able to fight,” said Hamilton. Once again, the principle applies: Great is in the Detail.

Before the drivers and team members can enjoy their well-deserved winter break, they must first psyche themselves up yet again for the grand finale to the 2015 season in the FORMULA 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX. As with all the races, you can play the DHL Fastest Lap Game on Facebook and pick the driver who will set the fastest lap. Why not sign in now and join in!
