That’s right, as Worldwide Partner of Rugby World Cup 2019™, we’re sending the two winning teams of the RUGBY.DELIVERED. tour to Japan for an ultimate rugby experience.
Who are they? Read on to find out.
A world of rugby
Launched in September 2018, RUGBY. DELIVERED. is a global campaign we organized to celebrate the passion of rugby together with fans around the world. We made an open invitation to fans around the world to host a rugby match using kit we would deliver. Hosts would be entered to win the grand prize – a trip with their team to Tokyo during Rugby World Cup 2019 for an #EpicExperience. One winner would be selected from match hosts Japan and another from abroad.
All told the tour kit travelled over 485,000 kilometers!
Over 450 entries poured in from nearly 60 countries. And over the course of eight months, 68 matches were played in 42 countries. More than 2,200 players competed in everything from 15s and 7s to touch and tag to beach and wheelchair, with an equal number of men and women participating.

An epic experience
Our winning teams are in for an epic experience in Tokyo. First, they’ll be in the stands for the England vs France game at International Stadium Yokohama on Saturday, October 12. The following day, they’ll play a friendly match at an official RWC venue. DHL ambassadors and rugby legends Sir John Kirwan and Shotaro Onishi will be on hand to support both teams and meet players from the local rugby community.
“We are very proud to deliver rugby to fans around the world – from grassroots matches in unique and remote corners of the globe to the world’s biggest and most prestigious rugby tournament in Japan.”
Fiona Taag, DHL Express Head of Global Sponsorship.
“We are very proud to deliver rugby to fans around the world,” said Fiona Taag, DHL Express Head of Global Sponsorship. “From grassroots matches in unique and remote corners of the globe to the world’s biggest and most prestigious rugby tournament in Japan. We look forward to bringing together these two teams and giving them the chance to play on a Rugby World Cup pitch, just like some of the world’s most famous rugby stars!”
The RUGBY. DELIVERED. experience at an official RWC venue on Sunday, October 13, will be held in partnership with the local rugby community. Following the game between the two winning teams, we’ll host a rugby clinic for local players, which will include insights from DHL’s rugby ambassadors.
A winning team
We are pleased to announce that Takafumi and his team from Gifu, Japan, alongside Johann and his team from Stellenbosch, South Africa, have been selected as our RUGBY. DELIVERED. winners. They were chosen based on the effort and enthusiasm of the match hosts and players as well as the quality of the match day experience.
Takafumi and his women’s 7s team from Gifu, Japan, embodied the RUGBY. DELIVERED. spirit with their unwavering passion and desire to grow the women’s game across Japan.
“I’m speechless with emotion,” said Takafumi when he heard the news. “I cannot believe my team will have a rugby match at a stadium used in RWC 2019. Huge thank you to DHL RUGBY. DELIVERED. campaign.”

Johann and his women’s 7s team from Stellenbosch University are the first women’s Maties team in South Africa. Their appetite to empower and encourage women to take up rugby in South Africa make them a worthy fit to join Takafumi and his team as the 2019 RUGBY. DELIVERED. winners.
“This is a massive opportunity for the ladies,” said Johann. “They’ll love it. This is absolutely life changing for our team – everyone will go crazy!”
