The Leipzig Gewandhausorchester opened their 2014 U.S. Tour with several unforgettable events in Houston, Texas.

After arriving in the U.S. with their instruments well intact the day before, several players began their day November 3 with a very special visit to a local middle school for a “Meet the Artists” event.

Stephanie Winker, flute, Simon Sommerhalder, oboe, and Léonard Frey-Maibach, cello, played a concert in the library of John Marshall Middle School for about 20 students, performing music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Joseph Haydn. The concert came before a question-and-answer session with the students in which they discussed their musical training and life as members of the Gewandhausorchester. Presented by DHL, which is a partner of the “Teach for All” program, the performance gave students the opportunity to experience classical music up close and personal, bringing the distinguished Gewandhaus sound to the young students, who may not have encountered the pieces before.

The previous day, the Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University in Houston hosted “The Miracle of Leipzig, an event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Wall diving West and East Germany. Led by historian Allen Matusow, the afternoon included podium discussions with the former Leipzig-based Consul General of the US, Todd Becker, History Professor Peter C. Caldwell and Rainer Eckert, the Director of the “Zeitgenössisches Forum Leipzig.” It was an unforgettable event commemorating a very historical moment in the history of both Leipzig and the Gewandhausorchester.

The orchestra ended their visit to Houston with a performance at Jones Hall in which former U.S. President George W. Bush was in attendance, along with Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany Ricardo Redeker and Vice Mayor of Leipzig, Andreas Mueller. With moving works by Mendelssohn on the program, the tour got off to a roaring good start.
