As the first ever Formula E race in Beijing on September 13 approaches, China’s Ho-Pin Tung - the first Chinese driver to test a Formula 1 car – got behind the wheel of a Spark-Renault SRT_01E last week at the Circuit Monteblanco in Spain. His take? Both drivers and fans are in for some exciting racing.

“It’s very different from what I expected,” says Ho-Pin Tung. “Driving this car is very different from any other Formula 1 car I would say. The car does make a really cool sound – almost like an airplane. It’s slightly different compared to other Formula 1 cars.”

What does he think about the car’s performance? “Much better than I expected,” he says. Braking, traction, speed and torque are all good, the Chinese driver adds.

Exciting both drivers and fans
Ho-Pin Tung had the chance to test the Fan Boost system and was amazed at the power. “It’s a big difference […] It’s going to be a very important feature for the race both to overtake and defend.”

“Going all electric in a very exciting format, definitely something which will not only excite the drivers but also the fans.” (Ho-Pin Tung)

If the Circuit Monteblanco test is any indication, both drivers and fans are in for some thrilling race action that will include a lot of overtaking. “You can brake really late, surprisingly late to be honest,” he says.” “Strategy is going to be very important during the race and I think you’ll see a lot of drivers looking for and creating chances to overtake.”

“Going all electric in a very exciting format, definitely something which will not only excite the drivers but also the fans. It’s very possibly the future of racing.”

Ho-Pin Tung reminds us that Formula E is more than a new world-class motorsport – it’s about accelerating the drive toward a sustainable future.
