The Buenos Aires ePrix marked the return of the FIA Formula E Championship after a three-month break over winter. While there was plenty of sensational racing action to see on the track, there was also a revolutionary innovation to admire off of it as the DHL CamCopter made its first flight in Buenos Aires.
The device is a drone equipped with a high-resolution camera that offers spectacular aerial views of the race track. The DHL CamCopter celebrated its maiden flight on the Friday before the race, when it flew a lap several metres above the 2.4-kilometre street circuit in the heart of the Argentinian capital, offering an entirely new perspective of the race.
A second flight took the DHL CamCopter high above the city of Buenos Aires. On this flight, the drone offered breathtaking aerial views of the metropolis on the Rio de la Plata, home to 2.8 million people and now host to the Formula E for the third time. The images captured by the DHL CamCopter were then uploaded to the DHL and Formula E social media channels to delight a global audience.
A global trailblazer: the DHL Parcelcopter
DHL is a genuine pioneer when it comes to developing drones for the transport and logistics industry. Since 2013, DHL Parcel has been conducting research into transporting goods by Parcelcopter in geographically challenging locations and under real conditions.
As part of its research and innovation project, DHL Parcel successfully tested the third-generation Parcelcopter in the Bavarian village of Reit im Winkl from January to March 2016. During these tests, DHL became the first parcel service in the world to incorporate a Parcelcopter directly into its logistics chain for parcel delivery using a specially developed packing station, the Parcelcopter SkyPort.
During the three-month trial period, private customers could simply insert their shipments into the SkyPort to initiate automated shipment and delivery by Parcelcopter. A total of 130 autonomous loading and offloading cycles were completed as part of the project.
The DHL Parcelcopter will primarily be used in situations when transport using established infrastructures is difficult or would take significantly more time. It is especially novel in that the company will now no longer be limited to the road network.
