“I feel like my dreams come true”
When she found out she would become DHL’s Match Ball Delivery Ambassador from Uganda, 9-year-old Lucky dreamed of going to England. Now that she’s here, she says it’s a dream come true.
Lucky may still be a little one, but this 9-year-old has big dreams.
“I want to play for the Ugandan national team,” she announces proudly.
For now one dream has come true: travelling to England and seeing a Rugby World Cup match at one of the world’s most famous Rugby stadiums: Twickenham.
DHL searched the globe to bring 48 children from 42 countries to the UK for one unforgettable experience – to deliver the match ball to a RWC 2015 game. Lucky delivered the match ball out on to the field of play right before the much-anticipated contest between Australia and Wales on October 10.
“I feel like my dreams come true and I also feel excited,” she said before the game.
Born to play
Lucky was born into a Rugby family. In fact, her mother, Fortunate, likes to joke that her daughter played Rugby before she was even born.
“When she was in the womb, she actually played rugby,” says Fortunate. “When I was six to seven months pregnant, I played a rugby game.”
Fortunate plays for the Ugandan national team and her passion for the game rubbed off on little Lucky.
“I want to follow in her footsteps,” she says. “I love Rugby as my best sport.”
“I would really love her to become a professional Rugby player,” says Fortunate. “I’ve been watching and following her as a mother, and she has a head for it.”
“She’s so brilliant,” says Lucky’s mother. “She’s my hero.”
Born diplomat
You see what Lucky’s means both on and off the field. At only 9 years old Lucky is already Rugby leader. She has a unique understanding of tag Rugby, both as a player, coach and referee.
As far as we’re concerned, she was a perfect choice to be the DHL Match Ball Deliver Ambassador from Uganda. And she took the role very seriously. After arriving in England, she decided to send messages to the team captains.
“When I woke up in the morning, she was busy on the table, writing,” her mother says. “Then I said ‘Lucky are you revising your books when we are here?’ She said ‘No mum, I am writing messages to my teams.’”
“I’m telling them to be strong so they can win the game,” adds Lucky. “I wrote them to the captains.”
Unbeknownst to her mother Lucky had even brought gifts for the teams: watches for the captains and wristbands for the assistants. Her mother asked her why.
“The captain gets the watch so he can tell the rest of the team that they have less time and have to play quickly to win,” she responded.
“She’s so brilliant,” says Fortunate. “She’s my hero.”
We agree. Great job, Lucky! We look forward to seeing you sport a Ugandan national jersey one day!
