The Red Bull Air Race World Championship is back and the first race in this year’s series saw perfect weather conditions over the Arabian Gulf in Abu Dhabi. A perfect opener to the 2014 season after the three-year break!

It was a thrilling takeoff under clear blue skies and over the Arabian Gulf’s sparkling blue waters at the 2014 season opener in Abu Dhabi. With unrivaled views of the race and the UAE capital’s impressive skyline, fans took in the thrilling show of amazing skills and piloting precision.

“It’s great. I’m on top of the world!” Pete McLeod

After a spectacular three-way battle for the victory, a new season produced a familiar winner. Reigning champion Paul Bonhomme beat out the field to continue as the best pilot. But it was extremely close – and with big surprises. Pete McLeod, at 30 the youngest pilot in the competition, made both the final four and the podium for the first time in his career.

“It’s not what I expected, but I’m very very pleased,” said Paul Bonhomme after the race. “I feel like it’s a monkey off my back.”

Abu Dhabi is just the beginning. The twelve pilots in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship have just dived into the new season and are now ready for the next stop in a Rovinj, Croatia on April 12-13, 2014.
