Gewandhausorchester brings Brahms back to Vienna
The adult home of Johannes Brahms, Vienna is a regular host to the Gewandhausorchester. The perfect place to wrap up the 2013 European Tour highlighting the “Brahms Cycle.”
Vienna’s Musikverein has often provided the perfect stage for the on-the-road performances of the Gewandhausorchester. In a unique cooperation, the players from Leipzig present their skills in the Goldener Saal on a near annual basis, and 2013 was no exception. This year, however, they’ve expanded on that tradition by taking to the stage as part of both their spring and fall tours.
The 2013 European Tour in October and November saw the orchestra performing from the Brahms Cycle, including Brahms’ Concerto for violin, violoncello and orchestra and the 1st Symphony in London, Paris and Vienna.
As the closing location for the tour, Vienna Musikverein was the setting for four performance dates from November 4 – 7. As the initial stage for several of Brahms’ symphonies, the setting brought the Gewandhausorchester’s Brahms Cycle full circle before DHL brings the players and their instruments back home to Leipzig for the concluding performances of the year.
