Reds move to FA Cup Quarter Final
A competitive clash against Preston North End sees Manchester United sweat a little before running out 3-1 winners.
The last time Manchester United travelled to Preston North End, the Reds had to rely on two second-half goals to secure a safe passage through to the next round of the FA Cup. That was 43 years ago. Fast forward to today and you find a similar story. In Monday night’s fifth-round match, the boys from Old Trafford faced their toughest opponent yet but eventually came out on top 3-1.
“They pushed us”
United’s boss, Louis van Gaal, knew that Preston was going to come out fighting. Currently in fourth place on the English League One table, The Lilywhites have a promotion to the Barclays Premier League in their sights. And he was right. The Reds were given their toughest encounter of the FA Cup campaign so far.
“We won for them because after the first goal they pushed us for the victory.”
(Ander Herrera)
Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera says the fans had a lot to do with their victory: “Today here in Preston’s stadium they were fantastic. They supported us at a tough moment and we are grateful of that. We won for them because after the first goal they pushed us for the victory.”
“Unbelievable spirit”
Ultimately United’s quality, when it was needed, and fighting spirit proved the difference.
After a first half in the freezing Lancashire cold that for the most part left both goalkeepers chilly spectators, the match really didn’t heat up until two minutes into the second half when Scott Laird’s deflected finish sent Deepdale delirious with delight.
While much has been said and written all season about formations, style of play and players’ best positions, United’s team spirit has never once been called into question or indeed waned. In fact, the Reds’ never-say-die attitude has made the difference several times this season.
Van Gaal hailed his side's "unbelievable spirit" in his post-match interviews - something that will be needed in abundance for the meeting with the current cup holders at Old Trafford in three weeks’ time.
Bring on Arsenal
For the moment, Wembley has edged a little closer and the silverware still remains very much in United’s sights. First, the team will have to get through powerhouse Arsenal - a team that is only two points behind United on the Premier League table.
The quarter-final clash with the joint-record FA Cup holders will certainly be the stand-out match of this season’s sixth round and we’re looking forward to it.
Good luck boys!
