On a mixed day for Robin van Persie, a winner in stoppage time was his 100th Premier League goal – one that made sure Sir Alex Ferguson’s 1,000th league game in charge of Manchester United would be a memorable one.

“The way Sir Alex Ferguson used to approach each game was quite similar, so I don´t think he would have put any pressure on because of the fact that it was his 1,000th game.” (Jonny Evans).

Despite netting his first United hat-trick during Sunday’s at 3-2 win over Southampton, van Persie was left frustrated following the Dutchman’s second-half penalty miss at St. Mary’s. Van Persie, who struck three goals to take his tally to four from just two starts, claimed the match ball to pull United from the brink of defeat on the south coast. However, the 29-year-old admitted he was “quite disappointed” after his chipped spot-kick was saved by Kelvin Davis.

It was tough luck on Southampton though who played superbly for most of the contest and were twice in front but they remained without a point in this their first Premier League season for seven years.

“It felt great, we came from behind twice. With 10 minutes to go, we had to fight from 2-1 down. (Robin Van Persie)
