Gewandhausorchester
Q&A with Gewandhausorchester Contrabassist Karsten Heinz
When the Gewandhausorchester goes out on tour, contrabassist Karsten Heinz is often along for the ride. As a soloist with the orchestra for the last five years, Heinz has traveled with the orchestra to play in renowned concert venues across Europe, Asia and North America.
One of the largest – and heaviest – instruments in the orchestra, the contrabass Heinz plays on is a rarity. With five strings instead of the standard four, Heinz's contrabass is able to create the much deeper tone demanded by many compositions written by German composers like Wagner and Strauss. It's a real physical feat to play, requiring both strength and endurance. Thankfully, there's also a stool for its players to rest on to keep the lengthier performances from becoming too draining for the musicians.
The unique sound of the contrabass contributes to the equally unique tone known as the Gewandhausklang, which is why its vital that both Heinz and his instrument are on hand when the Gewandhausorchester embarks on a tour. DHL sat down with Heinz before the orchestra's latest Asia tour in spring 2014 to learn more from his perspective about the importance of our Official Logistics Partnership.
