Reds make Champions debut, Rooney makes history
Manchester United started their first European campaign under new head coach David Moyes with a convincing win over Bayer Leverkusen led by front-man Wayne Rooney’s history-making goals.
There was no doubt who would be man of the match after the whistle blew under the floodlights of Old Trafford in Manchester United’s opening Champions League game against strong German underdog Bayer Leverkusen. Iconic striker Wayne Rooney made club history once again – firing his 199th and 200th goals, a landmark that virtually seals his future legendary status. Only three other United players have reached the double century: Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law and Jack Rowley.
“He has a chance to be one of the all-time leading goal scorers at this club,” said coach Moyes said after the game.
At 27 years old, Rooney has wasted little time reaching the 200-goal milestone and many expect him to not only to surpass Charlton’s 249, but to eventually hit 300. It was only nine years ago this month when he scored a hat trick against Fenerbahce in his first match in a Red Devil jersey.
Convincing start
Though the 4:2 victory was certainly hard-fought against the Bundesliga’s #3 team, United dominated much of the match. After going 2:1 early in the second half their lead was never in doubt. History-maker Rooney worked perfectly in tandem with the club’s top scorer, van Persie, assisting the Dutchman’s goal in the 59th minute.
After a somewhat shaky start to the season, the Reds now appear to be on solid ground just in time for their upcoming Premier League derby match against rivals Manchester City on September 22.
Three points and counting
Having those all-important first three points in the bag certainly takes some pressure off Moyes’ squad, which now looks forward to two experienced, well-organize sides in Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) and Real Sociedad (Spain) in October. The Ukrainian powerhouse has brought in a number of rising Brazilian stars, while the Spaniards have come off a stunning season that saw just three losses in their last 28 La Liga games.
