Get Sevens Fit!
It’s a great time to be a Rugby Sevens fan! The sport is busting out all over the globe – the buzz is big. People are being inspired by this fast and funky sport, not to mention the physicality and athleticism of its athletes – some of the fittest in the world. They are getting in the game in record numbers.
David Flatman is sticking his head in, too. A former rugby union prop who played for Bath and England, ‘Flats’ wants to know what it takes to reach elite Rugby Sevens fitness. So do we. So we’re teaming up with him and former England Sevens star (and fitness expert) Rob Vickerman to take a fitness journey. And we’d like you to join us. Let’s get #Flats7sFit!
It’s going to be really really good fun…for everyone except me.
David ‘Flats’ Flatman
A perfect fit
With careers cut short by injury, both David and Rob know a thing or two about hard work and determination. As life-long athletes, they also know how to have fun – all together a perfect fit for the coming weeks.
The former front row still looks the part of a big burly prop who likes to put his head in where it hurts. Known (not unsurprisingly) for his aggressive attack and super strength, Flats has some work to do if he’s to get fit for the feast of fastness that is Sevens rugby.
“I was more of an impact guy,” says Flats. “I had what the coaches would call, a negative impact, which I always thought was great banter.”
Rob, the Ex-England Sevens captain turned motivational speaker and fitness coach, is just as lean and mean as ever. The former center, who thrived in the Sevens environment, is now a World Rugby Sevens Series commentator when he’s not giving lessons in leadership, motivation, nutrition and elite behaviors. He’s eager to ship Flats into shape.
Over the next six weeks we’re going to help you: with your speed, your endurance and your nutrition.

“This is what you have to do as Sevens player; carries, offloads, tackles and line breaks,” Rob tells to Flats. “All whilst running at around 31-32 km/h for an average of 2.5k per game.”
#Flats7sFit– the series
Rugby Sevens requires peak physical conditioning. A perfect balance of strength, agility, speed and endurance. These guys and girls train hard – and that shows on the field.
With Rob’s expert help, Flats will go on a journey through fitness, nutrition and skills in an attempt to reach elite Rugby Sevens fitness. In a series of videos and blog posts, we’ll follow Flats each step of the way as he learns how to stay fit, eat right and master Sevens Rugby skills and drills. And we’ll be sharing the skills, drills and meal plans he receives along the way.
“Over the next six weeks we’re going to help you: with your speed, your endurance and your nutrition,” Rob tells Flats.
Join the journey!
The former player turned funny man will be serving up heaps of entertainment as he discovers what it takes to get #Flats7sFit. So come on and join in the fun! Follow Flats and be inspired to join the world of Rugby Sevens.
“If you want to join me on my journey into elite Sevens fitness (…) you can do so at DHL Rugby Facebook & Twitter,” says Flats. “It’s going to be really really good fun…for everyone except me.”
