Ready to ride the Great Ocean Road

Key Takeaways

  • Competition winner John Winter rides Australia’s snaking Great Ocean Road with ex-F1 driver Mark Webber
  • John says "it's probably the best bike riding experience he's even had"

John Winter loves riding bikes, loves road trips and just had to enter DHL’s World’s Best Road competition. But when an email from DHL popped up on his phone saying he had won, he couldn’t quite believe it.

This November reality finally hit home though, and John got to spend the best part of four days riding Australia’s Great Ocean Road alongside motor racing legend Mark Webber.

Starting at Airey’s Inlet, the gateway to the breathtaking curves of the Great Ocean Road, the ride took them all the way to the huge limestone stacks known as the Twelve Apostles in Port Campbell National Park. Taking place against a backdrop of lapping waves, salty breezes, waterfalls, river inlets and lush vegetation, the ride left John visibly moved.

To be honest, that’s probably the best bike riding experience that I’ve had.

Along the way, John and Mark also found time for go-cart racing, a get-together with local bikers, café stops, beer tastings, and to wrap up, a scenic helicopter ride over the Twelve Apostles.

Kicking back with Mark at the end of the trip, beer in hand, and the sun setting on a truly iconic coastline, John summed it up nicely:

“To be honest, that’s probably the best bike riding experience that I’ve had. And I’ve done some good trips through the US and Canada. But this, by far, is the best road in world.”
