Manchester United takes UNITED:LIVE to Beijing
Manchester United legends Dwight Yorke and Denis Irwin travel to Beijing, China for UNITED:LIVE, a one-day celebration of 'the beautiful game.'
On April 26, 2015, Manchester United held it’s third UNITED:LIVE event — this time in Beijing, China at the University of Science and Technology Beijing. In association with DHL, this Football Festival was aimed at celebrating ‘the beautiful game’ and culminated in a live screening of United’s Barclays Premier League match agains Everton.
“It was great to experience China and it’s mind-boggling we’ve got that much support" (Denis Irwin)
Legends Yorke and Irwin on hand
Before the event, Yorke was excited. “It’s always good to go out and see some of the club's many fans and interact with them, to share your opinions and expertise on United. I’m looking forward to it.”
Denis Irwin described the passion of Manchester United fans in China as “mind boggling.” Talking about his one visit to China as a player after the Reds won the Treble in 1999, Irwin said: “It was great to experience China and it’s mind-boggling we’ve got that much support – to have 80,000 people turn up for a pre-season friendly.”
Yorke and Irwin shared stories of their time with the club, discussed what it takes to become a professional footballer, as well as offered pre- and post-match analysis of the Reds — unfortunately — 3-0 loss to Everton.
Manchester United Soccer Schools
Prior to the big game, coaches from Manchester United Soccer Schools demonstrated to local children how to play the United way. The session saw participants learn the same drills, skills and values taught professional players at the world-famous football club.
"Manchester United has over 100 million followers in China and we are delighted to be able to bring UNITED:LIVE to Beijing,” said Manchester United's Group Managing Director, Richard Arnold. “We have a long-standing relationship with China, dating back to 1975, and the passion and knowledge of our fans based there is always overwhelming.
"The club has a long history of investing in youth, with our Academy structure being replicated all over the world, and we hope that those lucky enough to be involved enjoy participating in the Manchester United Soccer Schools.
"Learning to play the United way is much more than learning how to kick a ball. It also educates participants on the importance of health and wellbeing, as well as the attitude needed to succeed, a legacy they can go on to use in everyday life."
