The stakes were about as high as the get on May 16, 1999. As Arsenal faced Aston Villa at Highbury, United kicked off at Old Trafford against Tottenham to decide the 1999 Premier League championship. If the reigning champion Gunners won, the Reds needed the three victory points to take the title – and a record treble. As United Legend Ronny Johnsen – who was in midfield that day – says, “As long as we won the game, we were home free.”

And that’s exactly what happened. Arsenal went on to beat Aston Villa 1:0 and United edged out a determined Tottenham 2:1.

“We had a fantastic squad. Everybody knew that the got the chance.” (Ronny Johnsen)

It was indeed a day of drama. The Spurs “travelled to London determined not to lie down,” says United Legend Denis Irwin. And they shocked United when Les Ferdinand gave his team the lead. Goals from David Beckham and Andy Cole proved enough to give Ferguson’s team the win and the crown, but throughout the 90 minutes the result was never totally secure. Tottenham fought hard and were never out of the match. But in the end they were not able to deliver the remarkable favor Arsenal was hoping for and Sir Alex Ferguson won his 5th championship as manager – matching Sir Matt’s historic achievement.

“The manager was always good at giving you confidence when it came to important games.” (Ronny Johnsen)
