The Year Ahead for the Gewandhausorchester

The start of a new year serves as the perfect occasion to reflect on what went well in the past and what great experiences are to come in the year ahead. For the Gewandhausorchester, 2014 proved a remarkable year. 2015 will be no different.

With tours that took the players from one side of the globe to the other, in 2014 the Gewandhausorchester played first in China and Japan in the spring, across Europe in the summer months and later, at year’s end, in cities across the United States.

With more than two dozen performances planned around Europe, the orchestra will be showcasing their talents in venues closer to home.

In 2015, the touring momentum won’t slow; instead, with more than two dozen performances planned around Europe, the orchestra will be showcasing their talents in venues closer to home. Beginning in February, the musicians will travel nearly non-stop for a fortnight as they perform in concert venues across Europe. 

Two dozen performances across Europe
With an itinerary that includes visits to Brussels, Luxemburg, Madrid, Milan and Turin, the orchestra under the leadership of conductor Riccardo Chailly will be bringing their renditions of Mahler, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff and Tshcaikovsky to eager fans at symphony halls that have not recently experienced the unique Gewandhaus sound. With invitations to perform across Germany as well, the Leipzig-based players featuring Julian Rachlin on violin will likewise visit Freiburg, Cologne, Munich, Stuttgart and Dortmund in the whirlwind two-week tour.

Homecoming
Returning to Leipzig in late February, the next several months see the players focusing on their numerous performances at home, whether in the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, as well as in the Thomas Church and Opera. Thanks to today’s technology, fans from around the world can still experience their concerts in Leipzig via live streams and podcasts from home by connecting to the Gewandhaus’s home page so be sure to check there frequently as well as to stay up-to-date while the players are out on the road by following their blog online.

In October, the orchestra takes to the roads of Europe once again, this time bringing their Mozart-Strauss Cycle to several venues well-known to the musicians, including Vienna’s Musikverein, the Paris Philharmonic, Birmingham and London’s Barbican Centre. With shows selling out on prior visits, grabbing tickets to see the world’s oldest civic orchestra well in advance is highly recommended.

Accompanying the Thomaner Chor
Finally, in December, members of the orchestra will set off for an unusual destination, playing in Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Herzliya as accompaniment for guest appearances by the Thomaner Chor.
