Lewis Hamilton Sets DHL Fastest Lap in Malaysia
Pole, checkered flag and Fastest Lap – Lewis Hamilton takes it all at the 2014 Malaysian Grand Prix with a superb performance in the dominant silver arrow.
Click play above to watch DHL’s F1® Expert and former F1 driver Christian Danner tell the story behind Hamilton’s Fastest Lap at Sepang.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton rounded off a near perfect weekend with the DHL Fastest Lap, completing the 5.543-km Sepang International Circuit in 1 min 43.066 sec on Lap 53. The 2008 World Champion dominated the day, defending his pole position with ease off the grid and calmly controlling the race from there on.
Teammate Nico Rosberg, who started on P3, crossed the finish 17.3 seconds adrift in second – a silver arrow one-two that clearly demonstrates the dominance of the Mercedes-Benz engines.

Surely a silver arrow
There was no doubt in Christian Danner’s mind that a Mercedes-Benz driver would set the DHL Fastest Lap in Malaysia. DHL’s F1 Expert even picked Hamilton to set the fastest time because he was sure the Brit would do everything in his power to make up for his misfortune in Melbourne. Watch Danner make his prediction here.
And he was right. Hamilton’s crushing drive in Sepang won him his first-ever checkered flag in Malaysia and catapulted him to second place in the drivers’ standings behind teammate Rosberg.
“It had to be one of the two Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 cars, it had to be either Rosberg or Hamilton to set fastest lap,” said Danner in Malaysia after the race.
Red Bull charge?
Team Red Bull made a surprise showing in Sepang with current World Champion Sebastian Vettel grabbing the final podium spot and 15 points to launch his title defense. Teammate Daniel Ricciardo would have followed the four-time champ home had a series of unfortunate events not led to his retirement just a few laps before the finish.
“The question is, how much are they going to catch up until we go and race the next Grand Prix in Bahrain,” asked Danner.
We won’t have to wait long to find out. DHL has already completed the logistics race to Bahrain and preparation on the ground for the 2014 FORMULA 1 GULF AIR BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX this weekend is already underway.
