Lewis Hamilton takes DHL Fastest Lap in Silverstone
Lewis Hamilton had a fairy-tale home race at Silverstone. The local favorite won the British Grand Prix for the fourth time in a row and for the fifth time altogether, equaling the record set by Alain Prost and Jim Clark.
Apart from winning the race, Hamilton also took the DHL Fastest Lap, pole position and led the Grand Prix every lap of the way, giving him the fifth Grand Slam of his career. “I’m so happy ... this has got to be one of my sweetest wins here. I was gunning for this victory,” said Hamilton, overcome with emotion.
The Mercedes driver put his stamp on the race from the outset and never ran the risk of letting the win slip through his fingers. As if to prove his superiority, Hamilton posted the DHL Fastest Lap three laps before the checkered flag, setting a new lap record of 1:30.621 minutes for the Silverstone Circuit.
Over the last lap of the race, Red Bull pilot Max Verstappen counter-attacked on fresh tires with a 1:30.678, which was, nevertheless, just outside Hamilton’s best.
More success for Mercedes with Bottas
Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas also drove a strong race. He had started from ninth on the grid after a gearbox change but fought his way up into second place. The Finn set the fastest average speed over ten laps (1:31.258), leaving no one in any doubt about his dazzling form.
“What a race! I’m really happy for us as a team, to get the second one-two of the season”, said Bottas, beaming all over his face. “Of course, I would have liked to win, but I’m happy anyway, because that was definitely one of my best ever races.” Hamilton continued: “The team did an exceptional job this weekend, and Valtteri obviously drover a stormer today – I’m proud of him. It’s great to have him in the team.”
