Lewis Hamilton takes DHL Fastest Lap at Spielberg
Lewis Hamilton’s race weekend at the FORMULA 1 GROSSER PREIS VON ÖSTERREICH 2017 was so-so. The Mercedes driver only started from eighth place after a change of gearbox. Hamilton did indeed gain position in the race but narrowly missed the podium in P4 and lost more points to world championship leader, Sebastian Vettel.
Hamilton finished the race 1.4 seconds down on Daniel Ricciardo after steadily whittling away the deficit in the closing stages of the race. Hamilton posted a 1:07.411 to secure the DHL Fastest Lap, but despite that, the Mercedes driver was unable to find a way past Ricciardo.
Hamilton: “The car was great today, I could push the entire race on the tires, and I gave it absolutely everything out there. I really don’t think there was much left in the car at the end of the race, but I was probably a bit too kind in my fight with Daniel – and left him too much space. I won’t do that again.”
The fact that the Red Bull driver’s fastest lap was only 0.031 seconds slower than Hamilton’s showed that Ricciardo too was on the limit. “I do love a fight, and Lewis came out of nowhere over the last few laps. It felt like the gap was stable, and then within a handful of laps, he was catching me pretty rapidly,” said Ricciardo after achieving his fifth podium in a row. “I then had two laps to go and had to defend, which made it a pretty exciting race for me.”
