FC Bayern on delivery with DHL in China
The first stop on FC Bayern Munich’s Audi Summer Tour China 2015 saw the team travel to Beijing. For DHL, the trip to the Chinese capital was special from day one.
Just hours after FC Bayern Munich landed in China for the start of the tour, one of our DHL couriers was joined by a very special guest to make a delivery to a FC Bayern fan who had ordered a jersey from the team’s flagship store on Tmall Global.
Making his debut as a DHL courier was none other than the captain of FC Bayern Munich, Philipp Lahm. The fan who ordered the jersey – Harvey – certainly got the surprise of a lifetime when his Philipp Lahm jersey was delivered by Lahm himself!
For our courier, Liu Shuang, it was an unforgettable experience as well. Not only did he get to make a delivery with Philipp Lahm, but Lahm signed his DHL uniform shirt and snapped a selfie with him.
After the delivery, Lahm sat down with us for an interview to discuss the team’s trip to China and the amazing Chinese fans.
It is Lahm’s first time in China with FC Bayern Munich, and he and his teammates immediately felt the love from Chinese fans of Germany’s most successful soccer club: several hundred screaming, signing, and jubilant fans awaited the team right in the Beijing airport!
“We landed at about midday, and all of a sudden it was completely full, people were at the airport and the hotel,” said Lahm. “And it’s not five people, or ten people, but a few hundred or maybe even a thousand, and that is pretty special.”
One thing Lahm noticed was that many fans in China were wearing the team’s new jersey for the coming season. Since the end of May, official FC Bayern Munich merchandise has been available for fans in China via the team’s shop on Tmall Global. The platform was shaped by DHL eCommerce, which also handles the logistics of the shop.
“It was surprising to us that so many people already have the new jersey,” Lahm said. “We hadn’t counted on that.”
FC Bayern fans in China didn’t stop at jerseys, either. At the team’s first friendly match of the tour, the Audi Football Summit Beijing against Valencia CF, official FC Bayern scarves, traditional Bavarian hats, flags, and even the occasional lederhosen could be seen in the Bird’s Nest, the former Olympic stadium from the 2008 Games where the match was held.
The fans who were lucky enough to get a ticket and a rare chance to see FC Bayern in person were not disappointed, as the team beat Valencia 4-1 on two goals from Thomas Müller and one each from Thiago and Robert Lewandowski.
The Audi Summer Tour China 2015 continues in Shanghai, where FC Bayern take on F.C. Internazionale Milano in another friendly at the Audi Football Summit Shanghai.
