FC Bayern eye Porto in Champions League after break

Following the international break, FC Bayern Munich are back together and eyeing their next matches in the Bundesliga and the German Cup. In addition, their opponent is set for the quarterfinal of the Champions League.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, David Alaba, and Robert Lewandowski were just a few of the 12 FC Bayern Munich players on international duty last week with their respective national teams. But this week, all the players are back at the team's Säbener Strasse headquarters in Munich, completely concentrated on Bayern’s next tests – the next of which is a marquee matchup in German soccer.

On April 4, Bayern travel to Dortmund, a team that has steadily improved form following an abysmal start to the season. Despite being lower in the table than we’ve been used to seeing them in years past, Dortmund are on a slow and steady climb in the second half of the season and are determined to prove they are still a team that can play competitively against Bayern.

Bayern have their own motivation, however: the international break meant they had to live with the memory of their last Bundesliga performance – a 0-2 loss to Mönchengladbach – for nearly full two weeks. It was just their second loss of the season, and they will be looking to get back to their winning ways against Dortmund.

In the German Cup quarterfinal on April 8, Bayern will face a determined Bayer Leverkusen team, who are eager for a chance to grab any hardware they can this season with their Champions League campaign over and Bayern’s lock on the Bundesliga all but secure.

In a ceremony on March 20 in Nyon, France, officials at UEFA headquarters drew for the matchups in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. The draw sees Bayern paired against FC Porto, a Portuguese side with many players familiar to Bayern coach Pep Guardiola from his time as Barcelona’s coach. While they are seen as the easiest of the final eight teams in the Champions League, they have also not conceded a loss so far in this Champions League campaign.

Bayern will face Porto on the road on April 15, with the second leg being played in Munich on April 21.
