FC Bayern Munich return for Bundesliga second half

After going undefeated for the first half of the season and conceding just four goals, FC Bayern Munich are returning to action in the Bundesliga on Friday. They haven’t wrapped up the league title yet, but there seems to be no stopping the Bayern juggernaut.

It’s been six weeks since FC Bayern Munich last stepped on the pitch for a Bundesliga match. That match – a 2-1 win against Mainz  actually counts among the team’s lowlights of the first half because they conceded a goal.

It was a rare occurrence in the first part of the season, and as any football team would tell you, that is an excellent problem to have. Bayern Munich were more than dominant in the first half of the season; they were practically flawless. But the team is still keeping its feet on the ground.

“We’d be well advised to show great respect and a touch of humility and not approach the second half of the season in a euphoric state,” said the team’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge this week. “Mathematically, it’s not over yet by any means.”

Rummenigge is referring to Bayern’s 11 point Bundesliga lead over second-place Wolfsburg, who host Bayern Munich in Friday’s match. Rummenigge has a point – there is technically still plenty of time for another team to overtake Bayern – but that assumes Bayern would start losing. Judging from what we saw of their winter training camp in Qatar, that is not likely to be the case!

Picking up where they left off

After going on a well-deserved holiday over Christmas, DHL was on hand as the players spent the middle part of January at a training camp in Qatar. Even for players at the top of their game, it’s important to get back in to the rhythm of playing in actual matches again.

“For me as a player, I can only play my best when I’m at 100 percent,” said Bayern’s keeper Manuel Neuer on the importance of getting back into shape prior to the second half of the season.

The team looked like they hadn’t missed a beat since December in three friendly matches in January, most recently a 5-1 win against Bochum. They are still right on course in the Champions League as well and have the first leg of the Round of 16 against Shakhtar Donetsk in February.

After seeing all the hard work that went into Bayern’s training camp in Qatar, we can’t wait to see it all pay off over the course of the season. Whether it’s the Bundesliga or the Champions League, stay tuned to InMotion for the latest on FC Bayern Munich!
