Bayern kicks off fall with two superior wins

Outside Allianz Arena the leaves are starting to fall, but inside the only thing falling is goal after goal for FC Bayern Munich.

In the past week, FC Bayern Munich have faced two teams currently enjoying periods of good form who may have had the impression they had a shot at upsetting the German giants in their home stadium. Both teams were sorely mistaken.

Last week, Dinamo Zagreb traveled to Allianz Arena in Munich to face Pep Guardiola’s side in a Champions League group stage match. In their previous match, Dinamo upset Arsenal and were looking for another miracle against Bayern, but a man named Robert Lewandowski had other ideas.

Lewandowski led the way for Bayern with three goals, continuing a dazzling season that saw him score five in one match the week before. It was all over at half time with Bayern leading 4-0, but the Polish international added a fifth goal in the second half to complete his hat trick.

A few days later, it was a showdown of the Bundesliga’s top two teams as Borussia Dortmund traveled to Munich for a battle that would determine if first place was up for grabs or if Bayern would run away with the championship as they have so many times before. At the end of 90 minutes, Bayern had shown they belong in a league of their own, winning easily 5-1. Lewandowski had another two goals in this match, with Thomas Müller contributing two and Mario Götze adding one. The goals for Lewandowski gave him a Bundesliga record for goals scored in three matches (nine).

Guardiola beamed after the match that Bayern had won against “one of the best teams in Europe.”

Bayern now have a seven point lead on Dortmund in the Bundesliga after just eight matches. In the Champions League, they sit atop Group F with six points from two matches.

FC Bayern head into an international break that will see many players suiting up for their respective national teams. The team’s quest for three titles – Champions League, Bundesliga, and the German Cup – continues on October 17 with a Bundesliga match on the road against Werder Bremen. On October 20, Bayern play away to Arsenal in the group stage of the Champions League in a match that will likely be one of the highlights of the first round.
