Bayern head into international break with perfect Bundesliga record
As a whopping twelve Bayern players head to their respective national teams for international duty, the team can look back on a perfect start to their 2015/16 Bundesliga campaign.
Three wins in three matches – it's hard to imagine a better start for FC Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
After a 5-0 win against Hamburg to start off the season, Bayern followed up with victories against Hoffenheim (2-1) and Bayer Leverkusen (3-0).
The wins leave them with nine points from three matches, but despite the sensational start, Bayern trail Borussia Dortmund in the table on goals (both teams have conceded a single goal but Dortmund scored one more than Bayern in their three wins).
It’s still early in the season, but at the moment the heated rivalry between Bayern and Dortmund that was missing last year seems to be back.
Team spirit
One of the most striking observations that can be made at this early stage is that Bayern are playing very well as a team. This is not only evident in how matches develop and how the players work together, but in how the players interact with one another. The scoring hero of the first three matches has been Thomas Müller – scoring half of Bayern’s ten goals – but he selflessly gave up an opportunity to complete a hat trick against Leverkusen by allowing his teammate Arjen Robben to take the penalty that would put Bayern up 3-0 in the match.
“Thomas is important to us,” said Bayern Sporting Director Matthias Sammer. “He’s risen up the hierarchy and is one of our leaders.”
A big part of Müller’s success has been the help of new signing Douglas Costa, who has provided the assist to more than one of Müller’s early-season goals.
“He’s very good at doing his bit for the team and I hope he keeps it up,” Müller said of his teammate.
Müller is one of four Bayern players who will join the German national team for their Euro 2016 qualification matches. Eight other players are on national team duty as well. That includes Costa, who will suit up for Brazil.
Champions League on the horizon
After the international break, Bayern return to action in the Bundesliga with a home match against Augsburg. After that, the team’s first match in the group stage of the Champions League awaits.
The Champions League campaign, some might argue, is Bayern’s most important of the season. They’ll kick things off in Group F against Greek champions Olympiacos on September 16.
“The away games in particular will be thrilling clashes, the fans there are very emotional,” Bayern’s Xabi Alonso said of the ties against Olympiacos, Dinamo Zagreb, and Arsenal.
