FC Bayern starts 2015/2016 season with huge win against Hamburg
Pep Guardiola and the rest of the FC Bayern Munich team have made it clear that winning all three titles – Bundesliga, German Cup, and Champions League – is the goal for this season. In the first match of the new Bundesliga season, the squad got things started on the right foot.
Hamburg knew coming into the first match of the 2015/2016 Bundesliga season that they would have only a very slim chance against league giants FC Bayern Munich. It turned out that even that was expecting too much, as Bayern easily dusted up the guests from Hamburg at Allianz Arena 5-0.
After a relatively equal first half that saw Bayern take a 1-0 lead on a goal from Medhi Benatia, Pep’s side took the gloves off for the second half. Robert Lewandowski scored once, Thomas Müller put away two goals, and one of the team’s summer transfers – Douglas Costa – rounded out the scoring.
It was an excellent debut for the team in the new season, and Costa was one of the stars of the match.
“I really liked it,” said Costa. “It was a successful start and I'm very happy that I played my part in the victory.”
A long road ahead
After seeing Bayern in action on the Audi Summer Tour China 2015 (and giving the team a hand with their tour logistics!), it’s no surprise that they have hit the ground running in the new season.
Heavily favored to win the Bundesliga for the fourth time in a row (a feat no team has ever accomplished), the bigger question is how Bayern will fare in the Champions League. Last year, injuries kept the team from full strength in the later stages of the tournament and they were eliminated in the semifinal by eventual champions Barcelona.
This year, with new players like Costa and Arturo Vidal, Bayern’s already dangerous starting lineup has the added advantage of plenty of depth – something that has got to have other teams worried.
With the Bundesliga campaign off to a good start, Bayern’s next focus will be a very big match in the German Cup which sees them take on last year’s cup winners Wolfsburg on the road. Not only is this an important match that pits two of the Bundesliga’s best sides against each other very early in the cup competition, but Wolfsburg spoiled Bayern’s preseason with a win in the Supercup.
“There are easier draws,” said Bayern’s sporting director Matthias Sammer after the draw. “We lost there [in Wolfsburg] in the Supercup so we have to make amends.”
Champions League draw awaits
For many FC Bayern fans, the main event of the 2015/2016 season has yet to get under way. The draw for the group stage of the Champions League takes place on August 27, where Bayern will first learn who they face in the six-match group stage.
The first match day of the Champions League campaign is September 15 and 16. The big German Cup match against Wolfsburg is on October 27, and of course there is action in the Bundesliga nearly every weekend. Stay up to date with all the latest on FC Bayern Munich right here on InMotion!
