Commoners Wins DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship

Scholarship winners Commoners' Lookbook

Auckland-based fashion brand Commoners beat out two other emerging labels in New Zealand to win the 2013 DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship.

The prestigious award, which grants the winner a $10,000 NZ shipping credit as well as a life-changing meeting with online retailer www.my-wardrobe.com, is designed to identify the hottest up-and-coming designers in the country and help them export their brand abroad.

“The DHL export scholarship is very important to us as we see it as an opportunity to connect internationally,“ said Jae Mills from Commoners. “We are currently focused on growing our brand in the Australian market.“

Now in its sixth year, the scholarship has helped brands like Stolen Girlfriends Club and Lonely Hearts get a foot on the ground abroad, not only in Australia but also in Europe and the Americas, essential markets for fashion expansion.

Fierce competition

“Commoners presented an overall compelling submission. They’ve made an impression in a difficult sector of the market, while maintaining their design integrity. They have a strong, strategic marketing strategy that has great potential,” said Megan Wildermoth, National Strategic Account Manager (fashion and textiles) DHL Express New Zealand.

This year, the judges were so impressed with the caliber of the two other finalists, Blak and Meadowlark, that the team at www.my-wardrobe.com requested meetings with all three groups – a testament to the high style coming out of the southern island nation. In recognition of this, the judges awarded the other two finalists second equal prizes, for which they will each receive international freight to the value of $1000 with DHL.
