Inside a laboratory of creativity
In Episodes 13-16, we visit Cirque du Soleil International Headquarters in Montreal, Québec, which the artistic entertainment company calls a “laboratory of creativity, where the world’s best creative minds, craftspeople, experts in various domains, and artists can collaborate on creative projects.” After exploring this inspiring incubator of artistic genius and getting acquainted with the creative minds behind it, we couldn’t agree more. We hope you find this peek backstage as intriguing and inspiring as we did.
We’re not happy with just enough, it’s everything in the details.
Pavel Kotov, Casting Director
In Episode 13, Fabricating Innovation, we meet the research and development team led by Rino Côtè and discover how Cirque du Soleil is using advances in 3-D technology to accelerate the design process. Find out what went into the complex costumes of the Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour. “If we want a result that’s graceful, enchanting, and poetic,” says Côtè. “If we want people to be allured by the costumes and performances, every detail needs to be closely monitored.”

In Episode 14, Bringing to Light, we peer into the world of Cirque du Soleil Lighting Designer, Martin Labrecque, who literally brought the KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities show to light! We learn the challenges presented by the show’s color scheme, the artist’s movements and the director’s imagination. “As each detail is important, I must find a way to light everything up,” says Labrecque, a man who has the passion for detail needed to ensure everything comes together. “I really love to stand in a dark room,” he says. “To turn on the first light and then, somehow, start to paint the space.”

In Episode 15, Musical Cues, Composer Thierry Anger reveals how the artists and musicians rely on each other – how composers are inspired by the artists and how the artists are inspired by the music. A detail as minor as a single percussion or cymbal clash can tell the artist she is in the right spot. “The music must become one with the artistic performance,” says Anger. “Because the artist relies on [the musicians].”
