Danner: The more I drive it, the more I like it.

Ex-Formula 1 racer and DHL Motorsports Expert Christian Danner was “pleasantly surprised” after testing the Formula E Spark-Renault SRT_01E at Donington Park last week. The veteran driver sees lots of potential for the new motorsport to reach a wide audience.

Although Christian Danner made only a short run during the first official Formula E test at Donington Park on July 3, it was enough to leave a positive impression on the veteran racecar driver.

Watch Danner take a spin in the Spark-Renault SRT_01E and comment about it right afterward.

“I was very pleasantly surprised because you have a certain amount of prejudice: is it going to work? What will it be like?”

Danner, who contested 35 Formula 1 Grands Prix in his career not to mention racing in Indycar, the World Tour Car Championship, the World Endurance Championship and the 24-hour races at Le Mans, Spa and Nürburgring, took the DHL demo car out for spin to get a cockpit feel for this all-new, fully-electric international championship.

“Once you actually get your arse into the car you realize that, number one, it’s just a racing car. It does have a lot of grip from the tires, which was a big surprise because when you look at them that appears impossible,” he said. "The more I drive it, the more I like it."

“I love racing whether it's an electric motor or a combustion engine, I don't care, for me it’s a racing car.”

DHL’s Motorsports Expert, who also works as a Formula 1 commentator for German TV, reckons Formula E has the potential to appeal to a whole new fan base.

“It is very different and you shouldn't do too much comparison to other racing series. It's unique and therefore you [can] attract a lot of other new people to our sport.

“I love racing whether it's an electric motor or a combustion engine, I don't care, for me it’s a racing car. And this is a very good way to get to hook up with a lot of people who weren't interested [in racing] before.”
