FIA Formula E: Tempelhof comeback a complete success
On 10th and 11th of June, the city of Berlin extended its hospitality to FIA Formula E for a third time. Just as in 2015 when the Berlin ePrix made its debut, the former airport at Tempelhof served as the venue for the electric racing series. This occasion was, however, slightly different: for the first time ever, not one but two races were contested on a single weekend, thus giving the thousands of enthusiastic fans the opportunity to fill the grandstands on both Saturday and Sunday.
Lucas di Grassi delighted with double podium
The man of the weekend was Felix Rosenqvist. The Swede notched up his first Formula E victory on Saturday and was then runner-up in Sunday’s race won by Sebastien Buemi. ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport driver Lucas di Grassi made podium appearances on both days, finishing second and third respectively, to keep his title hopes alive. In the championship standings, the Brazilian is now 32 points behind leader Buemi.
This has been a fantastic weekend set against a fantastic backdrop
Lucas di Grassi
“This has been a fantastic weekend set against a fantastic backdrop,” said di Grassi. “Thanks to all the fans who supported us. I think that, for atmosphere, Germany is up there with Mexico. Two trophies on a single weekend is a very good result. However, we mustn’t lose sight of the fact that we need to continue working really hard to reduce the deficit in the table.”
Mission 2050 in the eVillage
In the heart of the German capital, there were plenty of interesting sights and activities away from the track as well. In its capacity as Founding Partner of the FIA Formula E and Official Logistics Partner to the series, DHL presented Mission 2050 in the eVillage. By the year 2050, all DHL transport-related emissions will be reduced to zero.
An important step in this direction is the ongoing introduction of bicycles and electric vehicles in the delivery of parcels. This reduces noise and air pollution and further enhances quality of life. Berlin is one of an increasing number of cities in which the DHL StreetScooter is deployed.
DHL EffiBOT delivers the champagne
Just as in previous Formula E races, the services of the DHL EffiBOT were called on in Berlin. Lucas di Grassi was highly impressed by the functionality of the fully automated trolley and completed a lap of the paddock perched on the loading platform. “A really amazing technology,” was the verdict of the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport driver.
EffiBOT was also given the job of trundling through the paddock with magnums of champagne bound for the podium. A very special assignment, which was performed with the customary aplomb and which also set the seal on two exciting races in Berlin.
Grand finale to the season in North America
Formula E now moves on from Europe to North America and the last two host cities of the 2016/17 season. In mid-July, two races will be contested in New York. Two weeks later, the grand finale to the season takes place in Montreal, where not only the new Formula E champion will be crowned but also the DHL eChampion. As official logistics partner, DHL is responsible for ensuring that the competition cars are transported across the Atlantic, arriving in one piece and on time.
