DHL FASTEST LAP AWARD: 2016 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX
Daniel Ricciardo clocked the fastest lap in Singapore with a time of 1:47.187 minutes, the third time he has done it this F1 season and the seventh time in his career. Red Bull brought him into the pits on the 47th of 61 laps for yet another set of supersoft tires. Two laps later, he posted the fastest time which none of his opponents was subsequently able to better.
On this final extra-fast stint, Ricciardo almost caught race winner Nico Rosberg. His car was shaving more than two seconds per lap off the Silver Arrow driven by the German at this stage of the race. But the Mercedes man ultimately scraped home just four tenths of a second ahead - the smallest winning margin of a Grand Prix contested this year.
"It was close today," said Daniel Ricciardo. "We did everything we could, and I thought it was pretty much a perfect race. Throughout the race, I wasn't really thinking about what happens when I catch him, I was just focusing on trying to catch Nico and put some pressure on. I knew his engineer had been on his radio saying 'Ricciardo is catching you, two seconds a lap'. It's not a nice feeling to hear that, so I was just trying to keep on pushing and keep the crowd entertained."
Championship leader Nico Rosberg continues to lead the 2016 DHL Fastest Lap Award. The German has been fastest in five races this season. Tying for second place are Rosberg's team-mate Lewis Hamilton and Ricciardo on three fastest laps. Drivers who have dominated one weekend each in this classification are Nico Hülkenberg (Force India), Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso), Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari) und McLaren's Fernando Alonso.
The next race on the calendar (2nd October) is the 2016 FORMULA 1 PETRONAS MALAYSIA GRAND PRIX. From the Marina Bay Circuit in Singapore to the Sepang International Circuit, just outside the capital city Kuala Lumpur, is little more than 300 kilometers. The logistics crews now have the job of transporting the 700 tonnes of equipment belonging to the FIA, FOM, teams and tire partner Pirelli from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur.
