DHL Fastest Lap Award: FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO HEINEKEN D’ITALIA 2016

Big surprise in Monza’s royal park as Fernando Alonso posts the fastest lap of the FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO D’ITALIA HEINEKEN 2016. None of the drivers was able to beat the time of 1:25.340 minutes set by Alonso on the 5.793-km track just before the end of the race, enabling the McLaren driver to secure the DHL Fastest Lap Award at the weekend.

So after a long wait, two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso now returns to win this special category in a race. Not only that, this was the veteran driver’s 22nd fastest time of his Formula 1 career in the fastest lap stakes and his first of the 2016 season – he last posted fastest lap almost three years ago in Abu Dhabi while still with Ferrari.

Nico Rosberg continues to lead the overall standings of the 2016 DHL Fastest Lap Award. The German Mercedes driver, who won the race in Monza, has already achieved five fastest laps this season. He is followed by his teammate Lewis Hamilton with three fastest times and Daniel Ricciardo with two. Nico Hülkenberg, Daniil Kvyat, Kimi Räikkönen and Alonso have all lapped the track in the fastest time once each.

Alonso ended the race just outside the points in twelfth place. “We didn’t really have the pace to be in the points today, so finishing 11th or 14th doesn’t really make much of a difference. But at least we finished the race on a positive note by setting the fastest lap,” he said after the end of the race.

Nico Rosberg on the other hand won at Monza for the first time in his Formula 1 career and reduced the points deficit on world champion Hamilton. The two Silver Arrow drivers are separated by just two points with seven races left in 2016, so the final third segment of the season promises to be extremely exciting.

The next race weekend will take place at the Marina Bay Street Circuit with the 2016 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX (16th -18th September). It’s now time for the Formula 1logistics technicians to say goodbye to their much-loved team transporters and motor homes. The second round of races overseas kicks off with Singapore, one of the highlights of the season. Around 30 to 35 tons of cargo per team now have to be shipped once again by sea and air.
