LOPEZ WINS DHL POLE POSITION AWARD AT WTCC FINALE

The 2015 World Touring Car Championship season concluded with two exciting contests in the FIA WTCC DHL RACE OF QATAR.

Jose Maria Lopez had double cause for celebration on a weekend that also saw a double premiere – the first race at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar and the first night race in WTCC history. Lopez, who had already secured the world title on the previous race weekend in Thailand, celebrated his tenth win of the season in Race 1. In the second race, the Argentine had to settle for eighth place while victory went to his team-mate Yvan Muller.

Strong qualifying as the cornerstone of success

Even before the two races took place, Lopez in his Citroën C-Elysée already had something to shout about. By setting the fastest lap in qualifying for the seventh time in the 2015 season, he secured the DHL Pole Position Award. It also means that Lopez and Citroën have swept the board – in addition to the DHL presented award, Lopez won the 2015 FIA WTCC Drivers Championship and he and his Citroën team have taken the FIA WTCC Manufacturers’ Championship.

“Performing strongly in qualification is critically important to any race driver,” said José María López. “On every occasion that I started from pole position in 2015, I was standing at the top of the podium at the end of the race. This shows just how important good preparation and a will to win are.”

The DHL Pole Position Award was established in 2015 to recognize the WTCC driver who most consistently puts himself in a winning position before each race. It recognizes speed, determination, good preparation and attention to detail, which are all reasons that our customers, including WTCC, turn to DHL for their logistics support.

At a special ceremony during the FIA WTCC DHL RACE OF QATAR, DHL Express Country Manager, Qatar, Nael Attiyat handed over the award – a donation to a charity of DHL’s choosing in the driver’s home country. The donation was made to Enseñá por Argentina, a non-profit organization committed to expanding educational opportunity in Argentina. Its mission is to help transform the education system so that all of Argentina’s children are able to achieve their full potential and have equal opportunities for the future. Enseña por Argentina is a member of the global Teach for All network, with which Deutsche Post DHL Group has a long-standing partnership around the world through its GoTeach corporate responsibility program.
