In 2020, the world will celebrate Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday. The year 2027 will mark the 200th anniversary of his death. In Bonn, the picturesque city on the Rhine River where the great composer was born, plans are making headway to build a new world-class concert hall in his honor.

Three architectural proposals have been selected from a design competition between internationally renowned architects. The winning design is scheduled to be decided in the early months of 2015 and building can begin in 2016. When the world celebrates the revolutionary composer in 21st century style, classical music buffs will have a new mecca to add to their Beethoven bucket lists.

Funding efforts to construct a new concert hall devoted to the famous German composer have been underway for years. As a primary sponsor, Deutsche Post DHL launched a new initiative in early 2014 to help speed up the process and achieve the goal of a completed concert hall by 2020 to mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.

The spectacular new showcase for classical music is to be built next door to the current Beethovenhalle in Bonn, which was completed in 1959. A designated historic monument, it continues to host world-class concerts and will be preserved. As a global company with its headquarters in Bonn, Deutsche Post DHL is committed to supporting cultural life in the city where it is based and has pledged €30 million towards construction of the prestigious new performance hall.

At the end of October, the ten finalists of the architectural contest presented their designs, which will be on display at the Group’s headquarters Post Tower building until mid-November. Of the ten finalist proposals, a jury of experts, regional authorities and investors – including Deutsche Post DHL – selected three preliminary winners: David Chipperfield (United Kingdom), Kadawittfeld (Germany) and François Valentiny (Luxembourg).
