FIA Formula E Diary: Lucas Di Grassi live from London

London calling! The first ever Formula E season is approaching its climax. The first champion in the history of the new Formula E series will be crowned in the capital city of the UK next weekend. One possible contender is Lucas di Grassi whose exclusive DHL InMotion diary we publish here.

We gave it all we had and kept battling for the title right up to the end. We swore we’d do that as a team. We may not have won the championship, but we can leave here with our heads held high and with a sense of pride that we competed for the Formula E title in the first year of this series. Our preparations for next season start tomorrow.

Our objective before the weekend was still to be in contention for the title on Sunday, which is what we managed today. Although the race victory itself always has to be the target, sometimes you have to be satisfied with the points for a fourth-place finish. In the first half of the race, the battery of my electric racer reached maximum temperature earlier than expected, so my team then had to change strategy. After the obligatory pit stop, including the change of vehicle, I went all out for a podium finish and missed third place by just two and a half seconds. Of all three title contenders, we are in the most difficult position, but that’s motivation enough. Anyway, one more qualifying and one more race. Anything is possible tomorrow.

Asia, South America, North America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe – having crisscrossed the continents in its debut season, Formula E reaches its grand finale tomorrow. We have the first of two races today and the second on Sunday. The focus for me and everyone in my ABT Sportsline team is intense, and that includes my team-mate Daniel Abt who has also had a great season. Together, we currently occupy second place in the team standings, and over these last two days, we are determined to make one final push together. Here we go!

In my campaign to win the title, I can use a little help from you, so for the last time this season, I’m asking you to give me your vote on the FanBoost page. On the final weekend of the season, the FIA will once again be granting an extra burst of power equivalent to 30 kW over five seconds to the Formula E driver who receives the most votes on the internet. So please click on my name here: fanboost.fiaformulae.com. Thank you!

Now that initial preparations are out of the way, one thing is clear: the entire team and I will be battling right up to the final metre of the second race to make our dream come true and win the title. I have made six podium appearances in the nine races so far – more than any other driver in the field. This knowledge gives me a lot of confidence for the next few days.

There are just three days now until the first of the final two races of the season which will be contested this weekend in London. I can feel great tension inside me – but tension of the positive kind. I firmly believe that we can manage to win the first ever title in this new series. That would be something for the record books. We currently trail Nelson Piquet Jnr by 17 points, with 60 more up for grabs. This includes the points awarded for grid positions and fastest race laps. So there is still everything to play for.
