Rosberg charges to 4th DHL Fastest Lap, narrowly misses podium

Rosber crushes the competition late in the Hungarian GP

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg raced the DHL Fastest Lap in a late charge on fresh rubber at Hungary’s Hungaroring this past Sunday, coming up short of the podium despite a series of crushingly fast laps toward the end of the race.

Nine one-hundredths of a second – an eternity in Formula 1 racing. That’s how much time was between DHL Fastest Lap driver, Nico Rosberg, and the next fastest driver of the day, Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull, who also topped the podium in an action-packed thriller.

With only 13 laps to go in the race, Rosberg, who is currently at the top of the drivers’ table, found himself in a disappointing 7th place after some braking issues mid-way through the race not to mention an unlucky break with the safety car.

“I had a great last stint and at the end there was one chance to overtake Lewis in the last lap, but it didn't work out.” (Nico Rosberg)

“Then I was able to push a lot,” he said afterward.

And push it he did. Rosberg piloted a series of near-perfect laps, pulling himself to 4th place and within striking distance of Lewis Hamilton and a spot on the podium. Alas, he wasn’t able to overtake his teammate and number one rival for the 2014 Drivers’ Championship.

“I had a great last stint and at the end there was one chance to overtake Lewis in the last lap, but it didn't work out,” he added.

“To have to pass guys again to win the race, as I did in Canada, makes it a lot more satisfying, knowing that we did have a bit of a fight on our hands.” (Daniel Ricciardo)

Fans enjoyed a real Hungarian thriller as Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo claimed a stunning victory, his second of the year. After it was Ferrrari’s Fernando Alonso who led in the closing stages, having worked his way forward on a clever strategy and a tire gamble in lap 38, the Australian passed both his British and Spanish rivals in the last four laps of the race.

The standings
Rosberg’s superb stint gives him his 4th DHL Fastest Lap of the season and puts him one ahead of Hamilton.

The two Silver Arrows are also duking it out at the top of the drivers’ table, with Rosberg at 202 and Hamilton at 191 points. Who will come out on top?
