Lewis Hamilton takes DHL Fastest Lap in Singapore
Lewis Hamilton was the happy winner of the Singapore Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver celebrated his seventh win of the season at the Marina Bay Street Circuit and extended his lead on Sebastian Vettel in the battle for the championship to 28 points. Hamilton’s strong performance in the night race was crowned with the DHL Fastest Lap.
Things clicked into place for Hamilton right at the start. The British driver, who had lined up down in fifth place on the grid, benefited from the collision between Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Räikkönen and Max Verstappen that put all three of them out of the race, and Hamilton took the lead after only a few corners.
Hamilton did not make a mistake in the longest race of the year despite tricky track conditions caused by a heavy shower of rain just before the start of the race and three safety car periods. He kept a cool head at all times and maintained his lead at the checkered flag.
Lap times gradually began to improve during the closing stages of the race thanks to a track which was now dry. Hamilton, his team-mate Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo, were all in the hunt for the DHL Fastest Lap which Hamilton secured on Lap 55.
Running ultrasoft tires, the Mercedes driver burned a time of 1:45.008 into the asphalt – this was the fastest race lap ever seen in Singapore. Hamilton was able to narrowly beat both Ricciardo (1:45.301) and Bottas (1:45.405).
“What a day – I can’t believe it, I’m so happy!” said Hamilton with a smile all over his face after his win against the backdrop of Singapore’s amazing skyline. “It was the first time for all of us driving here in the rain, so it was a massive challenge. But I love that when you have to rise to the toughest of challenges, that’s the most exciting part for me. Then it was all about staying focused and not making any mistakes.”
