Tackleman’s World XV

Welcome again to a quick jaunt through rugby matters with me, Tackleman.

If you're a Northie, you're currently melting in a European heatwave and thanking your lucky stars that pre-season doesn't apply to you. Down south and life is getting very interesting. The Kiwis dominated Super Rugby and The Rugby Championship is just around the corner. 

So, let's take a moment to look at who's hot at the moment and immerse ourselves in that age old past time of selecting a World XV. It's always guaranteed to excite and provoke a lively debate, so here goes.

First thing to say, no Aussies. Amazing I realise. But if there was an award for most 2nd place selections the Green and Gold would take it. Pocock, Hooper, Genia Folau, Cooper; all snapping at the heels of the top picks. 

So, here goes, starting at Fullback

15: Leigh Halfpenny - took his time to settle at Toulon but now running the show. Awesome for the Lions in 2013 and, when not tackling with his head, a rock in defence. Killer with the boot. Run close by Dagg and Folau.

14: Tommy Bowe - ok, the screaming starts now. I like Bowe. He's got enough gas, he's chock full of attitude and he's a big lump. He's my man.

13: Conrad Smith - THE centre of his generation. An astonishing player and the heart of the AB's back line. 

12: Wesley Fofana - we have to have a Frenchman in the backs. Why? Because no one can light up a game like a Frenchman. Released from St André's strict shackles this talent could really shine.

11: Julian Savea - another huge debate here. Savea's brilliance sees the 'Cane's flyer make the roster. World class.

10: Dan Carter - ok, he's long in the tooth, low on game time and struggling to make the Kiwi XV but would you drop him? Thought not.

9: Aaron Smith - another New Zealander and a close run thing with Genia, but the Aussie is flying on reputation a bit now whilst Smith is running on premium. My starting 9

Into the big boys now…

1: Alex Corbisiero - struggling with injuries but when he's fit he is the most destructive loosehead prop around. Pretty useful ball in hand too.

2: Bismarck du Plessis - not the force he was but still my pick given the lack of a stand out 2 at the moment. Plus he's called Bismarck. That's a cool name.

3: Carl Hayman - yes I know, he's retired. But Steve Hansen would love him back and will have him on speed dial during Rugby World Cup should injuries strike. Still the best.

4: Sam Whitelock - sounds like a Private Detective, performs like a superstar. Gets better and better season by season

5: Paul O'Connell - this Rugby World Cup will be his international swan song & if the Irish get their hands on the Webb Ellis Trophy it will be because of this hero's performances. He is up there as the best Ireland has ever produced; BOD included.

6: Thierry Dusautoir - has a death stare unmatched in world rugby. Seems genuinely embarrassed by France's current malaise. One of their few world leaders.

7: Richie McCaw - ... Enough said.

8: Sergio Parisse - yes, I rate him above Reid. Italian rugby will cry deep, painful tears when he retires. Skilful, hard as nails and a classy operator.
