United move to fifth round in FA Cup

As Manchester United take to the pitch for their Premier League matchup against Stoke City, let’s look back at the team’s entertaining victory over Derby County last Friday and give a shout out to former Red captain Nemanja Vidic, who announced his retirement.

Some 31k+ fans came out on a wintry evening at iPro Stadium to watch Championship promotion-chasing Derby County face Premier League title contenders Manchester United. The kick-off was greeted with a deafening roar as 5,471 noisy visiting fans – United’s biggest away end of the season – more than played their part, rolling through a traditional repertoire that included a tribute to Nemanja Vidic, who announced his retirement earlier that day.

A sharp United side
In a bright start by the Reds, Anthony Martial had a good early chance, firing over from just inside the box. But it didn’t take much longer for the Reds to open the scoring – and in superb fashion, as captain Wayne Rooney cut inside to bend a shot into the far corner just after the quarter-hour mark.

The boys from Old Trafford remained sharp, continuously probing for weakness in Derby’s defense. Martial narrowly failed to control a return pass from Rooney that would have left the Frenchman one-on-one with goalkeeper Scott Carson.

Though the Reds were utterly in control, Derby equalized out of the blue eight minutes before the break as midfielder Thorne ran onto a neat ball over the top to slot past David De Gea.

In the second half, however, Louis van Gaal’s side, who dominated much of the game, were not to be deterred and Daley Blind netted smartly midway through the second half, before Juan Mata added a late third to secure United’s place in the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The away end made terrific noise to celebrate as the quest to reach Wembley goes on!

A United legend leaves the game
At the ripe age of 34, former Reds captain Nemanja Vidic has decided to end his career. The United legend for the club for eight years from January 2006 to May 2014, helping them win five Premier League titles, three League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup. An amazing resume!

It safe to say that Vidic played his best years at Old Trafford. We join Manchester United in thanking him for his service to the club and wish him all the best for his retirement!

Now it’s time to follow the action in the Theatre of Dreams [MB2]as United takes the field against Stoke City. Good luck boys!
