Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv wins unforgettable Euroleague Championship
After a buzzer-beater in the semi-final and a grueling overtime battle in the final, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv have been crowned the 2014 Euroleague Champions.
In front of 10,000 fans who traveled from Israel and lit up Milan’s Mediolanum Forum in the team's signature yellow and blue colors, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv ended a six-game losing streak against Spanish basketball powerhouse Real Madrid in thrilling fashion to claim their sixth European Championship.
After the semi-final against CSKA Moscow came down to a buzzer-beater lay-up by Maccabi’s Tyrese Rice, Sunday’s game against Real was even closer. The second half alone featured 19 lead changes and seven ties. At the end of regulation, the teams were dead even at 73 points each, and the Euroleague final went to overtime for the first time since 1969.
Rice, the hero of the semi-final, was indispensable for Maccabi in the final as well, sinking two three-pointers and adding a few more buckets from the free throw line in overtime on his way to a 26-point night off the bench. The game quickly got out of reach for Real in overtime and ended in Maccabi’s favor, 98-86.
“Thanks to everybody for the support and congrats. Still hasn’t hit me yet but we are the Europe champs!” (Tyrese Rice on Twitter)
Rice’s essential contributions to the team’s success in the tournament earned him MVP honors for the Euroleague Final Four.
