Buemi wins Formula E season opener in Beijing

Switzerland’s Sebastien Buemi has won the first ePrix of the new 2015/16 Formula E-season in Beijing. He dominated proceedings, relegating Lucas di Grassi and Nick Heidfeld to second and third place respectively.

Sebastien Buemi started the first race of the second Formula E season on Saturday from pole position. The e.Dams driver immediately pulled out a comfortable gap at the front and went on to record a comfortable victory. Taken together with the pole position and fastest lap of the race, the win gives Buemi a maximum score of 30 points on the first race weekend.

Last year’s winner, Lucas di Grassi, qualified fourth for the first outing of the season. The Brazilian benefited from a superior strategy at the mid-race vehicle change, moving up into second place and holding onto the position until the finish. This puts the Abt squad member into second place in the table on 18 points. Nick Heidfeld completed the podium party in Beijing, while last year’s champion Nelson Piquet Jr. finished way down the field in 15th.

As part of the Formula E festivities in Beijing, fans had the opportunity to indulge in fun activities and entertainment at the DHL booth in the eVillage, an urban festival area close to the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium. They were able to get a sense of the speed of Formula E in the 4D Experience Cinema, learn about the multimodal journey the race cars traveled from Europe to China at a digital experience and try their skills in the Last Mile Delivery interactive games.

From Britain to China

The first race of the second season was accomplished even before the Beijing ePrix started: 40 racing cars and equipment had to be transported from the UK to China.

DHL designed a multimodal transportation solution combining road, rail and sea to move the cars in the most efficient way. The tightly organized logistics call for speed, security and reliability. Customs clearance, delivery by truck from the port to the race venue and the assembly and dismantling of the equipment are carried out according to a precise plan that is made several months in advance.

In addition to the vehicles themselves, DHL also transports 200 tires, 45 batteries, 20 charging units and the TV equipment between races.
